New LinkedIn Study of More Than 2 Million Members Reveals Places With Highest Salaries

Where you live and what courses you study really do make a difference in how much you’ll make.

It's probably no surprise that where you live and what courses you study in school have an impact on the salary you can expect to make. Sure enough, job networking site LinkedIn, which is now a part of Microsoft, recently conducted a study of more than 2 million members to determine a variety of information about their compensation.

The results were just reported, and they reveal the top-10 highest-paying cities in the U.S. Here they are, in order, along with the median total compensation including bonuses and commissions if applicable:

1. San Francisco, CA $112,400

2. Seattle, WA $95,600

3. Washington D.C. area $87,300

4. New York City, NY $86,600

5. Boston, MA $86,000

6. Houston, TX $82,000

7. Los Angeles, CA $81,200

8. Austin, TX $80,600

9. Denver, CO $80,300

10. Chicago, IL $79,000

LinkedIn's survey also revealed the 20 highest-paying fields of study in the United States. Here they are, along with median total compensation:

1. Computer Science $92,300

2. Visual Art $90,390

3. Sociology $87,900

4. Industrial Engineering & Management Science $85,800

5. Business Management & Administration $83,700

6. Architecture, Design & Applied Art $81,200

7. Law $79,000

8. Electrical & Electronic Engineering $78,600

9. Physics $78,400

10. Journalism, Media & Communication $77,979

11. Religion $75,000

12. Engineering $73,350

13. Liberal Arts $72,500

14. History $71,700

15. Civil Engineering $69,100

16. Mechanical Engineering $66,700

17. Language & Literature $65,700

18. Economics $64,300

19. Science $63,800

20. Environmental Science & Forestry $55,700
