If you are a startup, you undoubtedly have big ideas and big goals. You have a full-plate, and organization and delegation is key to running a smooth sailing ship. As running a remote team becomes increasingly popular in the startup community, organization, communication, delegation and follow-up has become even more important.
You have to keep everyone on the same page, regardless of where they are located around the world. There are plenty of project management software tools available, each with its own problem-solving features. With so many available, finding the perfect match for your team can be a daunting task.
To help make the process easier for you, I have put together a list of my five favorites, each of which offers attractive plug-and-play solutions to meet the demanding needs of startups all over the world.
Trello takes on a visual approach to help you realize your ideas. They incorporate what the call Kanban boards, allowing you to drag-and-drop tasks and create project-flow leading up to your end goal. It is particularly useful for design and development agencies that do website design and software development.
One of the most functional aspects of Trello is the ability to drag-and-drop anything, not just from your internal boards, but also pictures and texts from Slack, Google Doc and components that you need in different stages of your project's pipeline. "The simplicity of Trello is what originally attracted me to it. It's a tool that allows us to manage multiple projects at a time, keeping the entire team on the same page," says Dan Skaggs, founder of One Thing Marketing.
If you need a tool to quickly jot down ideas when you get your next big idea, Quire is a task management tool that you should take a look at. It allows you to take an initial idea, and create an infinite number of tasks and sub-tasks, leading up to the realization of that idea.
It features a sleek user interface, and an iOS app, giving you the ability to quickly input ideas at any time, regardless of your location or time of the day. One of the features that sets this tool apart from others, is its ability to input "ideas" using the camera on your mobile device. Meeting notes, whiteboard content or anything that is physically within sight can easily be inputted with a single camera capture.
Smartsheet is a great collaboration tool for those seeking a straightforward, visual way to manage tasks. It's especially attractive to those that love working in spreadsheets, as it resembles a more advanced version of Excel, designed for teams and collaborative work environments.
For someone who is familiar with spreadsheet-like interface, Smartsheet features a very small learning curve. It makes monitoring your entire team easy, allowing you to see the big picture in a single glance. It doesn't have the most advanced user interface, but its functionality is superb and provides a familiar landscape to those who have previously run all of their project management via Excel spreadsheets.
Asana lets you easily track your work, and is a great fit for organization that already have their work flow down and are just looking for a slick program to manage it from. It's a more advanced task management tool that is extremely integration-rich with endless functionality, suitable for teams of all sizes.
Asana allows you to quickly switch from list view to either a calendar of board view. This helps organize your tasks by due date, priority, etc. Asana also allows you to send an email to create new tasks, which is helpful for those always on the go. If you receive an email that needs to be addressed, simply forward it to Asana and a new task will automatically be created.
