5 Keys To Building Your Personal Brand

There are so many examples of folks who have helped build their careers on the back of their personal brand, like Gary Vaynerchuk.

Personal branding is something everyone is paying more attention to.

The days when you could just be behind your desk doing your thing are slowly waning. The world has become so much more open. People want to consume information! They want to know you better. The days of people creating a resume and looking for a job may soon be gone.

People are looking for trusted advisors.

A lot of people think it's selfish - that it can be all about them, but it can be very different than that. Building a personal brand that's authentic, honest, and intentionally relational could be a game changer for you, your organization, and everything you touch along the way.

As you begin taking a closer look at your personal brand, maybe hoping to fill the role of advisor, it's good to consider that:

 

  1. You have a personal brand whether you like it or not.

Whether it's LinkedIn, Hubspot, or any platform, the reality is that your employer or someone you're working with is probably checking out one of those profiles before meeting with you or forming a relationships.

The question is, "Are you going to take care of and invest in your personal brand?" There are amazing people out there that are overlooked because they've never shared anything and it's hard for them to get a gig.

But what are you going to do about it? Sharing your stories: tapping into successes and failures that represent your very real experience is a great place to start from. Everybody has a story to tell and has experiences that are unique to them but to which others can relate.

 

  1. It could greatly benefit your company.

One of the greatest myths of personal branding is that building a personal brand may hurt your company. On the contrary! A well-crafted and effective brand can lead to more opportunities to be a personal adviser which often leads to exponential growth.

Ultimately, caring for one's personal brand is a challenge we all face, but it has never been easier to access resources that can help you do this today.

 

  1. Honesty is the best policy.

You have to talk about this the right way. Everyone will see and be aware of what you're doing in a very public way. So you have to be honest about what your intentions are.

It doesn't matter where you're brand new to the concept of brand building or a seasoned veteran hoping to take things to the next level. People want to know who you are and what you're about. Framing yourself and your story in an honest way is refreshing in a world of sensationalism. It's compelling and inspiring.

 

  1. It will help with career moves.

You don't need a resume to sell yourself anymore.

Your best career moves are not coming from applying for a job at a company that you are aspiring to be part of. It comes from already having a relationship and brand equity where you no longer have to have a resume. You're able to reach and talk to the right people.

Making moves becomes easier and happens more naturally. There's a foreknowledge of you that extends beyond the words on a resume and takes shape through personal branding that utilizes relationship and resource.

The hiring process is changing, and personal brand seems to be where everything is going.

What is your system for creating these relationships?

 

  1. You can't fake it.

Authenticity is at the core of everything we're talking about, and it must come out of what you love. If you're in a leadership position you cannot force this. Some people won't be comfortable doing this and that's okay. Just remember that actions speak louder than words, and spending time doing this sends a message to the rest of your people that it's important.

Be clear about starting and building something.

The idea of personal branding can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be the same as everyone else's. It's yours and should stem from the passion and curiosity you have. It can be crippling to compare oneself with people who have been doing this at a high level for a long time.

Take one step. Whatever it is, just do one thing today. It will start you down a much longer path in a direction that may surprise you. It can pay dividends in the future.
