The good news? It’s highly preventable.

There could be any number of reasons why employees leave, but there is one that I want to touch on specifically because it is highly preventable: unfulfilling professional environments and no room for advancement.
Top talent (and talent in general) looks for companies that will add to their professional career. Competitive salary and benefits are important, but so is the chance to add to the field in a way that benefits the individual. Hiring people that are aligned with your company's goals and values is one way to decrease the chances of high turnover. There are always going to be unforeseen circumstances that lead to termination or resignation. However, if you can make the company environment as fulfilling as possible in the meantime, you can prevent at least some of these from happening!
Geckoboard is a great example of a company that has high employee satisfaction from hiring for culture fit. This article/podcast explains their strategy in-depth, but here's a quick overview:
- The kind of interview to stay away from:
Are your questions 'Googleable'? If you answered yes, you may want to rethink your interview strategy. Use unusual interviews to get to the bottom of a candidate's personality. Remember: skills can be taught. Fitting in with the company's goals for the future? Not so much.
- How to ensure cultural fit hires:
Get everybody involved. You want the cultural fit to be long-term, so get the whole team to pitch in to see if the candidates have the ideal characteristics. Additionally, define culture fit correctly! It doesn't have to be discriminatory.
- What to communicate throughout the hiring process:
If you want candidates that jive with your values, you have to showcase them from the get go. Get creative with media content on your social media platforms and careers site. Make it easy to navigate and learn about your company. This way, potential applicants that mesh with your mission will be more likely to apply.
- What fuels employees' happiness
Happy employees = better hires. This may happen through great referrals or hearsay of the awesome work environment. Geckoboard stresses work/life balance.
- How to maintain culture as your team grows
Cultivating culture doesn't stop when you're done recruiting. Be clear about what you don't stand for so that you don't run into issues later down the line.
