5 Books You Need to Read This Fall If You Want to Be Mentally Tougher

The first step to improving yourself is to shed unnecessary mental fat and that starts with these mind-enriching books.

It's often said that you can only go as far as your mindset is properly equipped to transport you when chasing after business and health goals.

During my own personal journey of needing to shed some excess mental fat through letting go of limiting beliefs that didn't serve me nor the life I desired to create, I realized I needed some mentors. I needed to rewire my brain to perceive situations and opportunities differently.

I also realized that my current environment didn't have the people or resources I was seeking. Instead of making an excuse, I did the next best thing which was to seek out virtual mentors for guidance.

With that said, when it comes to becoming mentally tough and developing an empowering mindset, start with these five books and revisit them whenever you start to feel yourself drifting away.

1.The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom (A Toltec Wisdom Book), by Don Miguel Ruiz

At first glance, this book may come across as just another self-help book, but looks can be deceiving. The four agreements are insanely simple, but the applications to various aspects of your life are powerful and vast.

For example, the principle of being impeccable with your word is powerful because the way you talk to yourself and the standard you hold yourself too will seep into how you conduct yourself in various endeavors in life and business.

2. Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, by Dr. Carol S. Dweck

I easily say that without this book, I wouldn't have written my first book nor pursued speaking endeavors because of my existing and limiting beliefs about myself and the world.

The main premise of this book is the difference between approaching life with a growth mindset compared to a fixed mindset.

A growth mindset sees the world in abundance and believes skills and talents can be developed over time. While a fixed mindset believes you either have it or don't. High-achievers get their success because they're naturally gifted, not because of the work they put in.

As Dr. Dweck states, "the view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life."

3. Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win, by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin

One of the most important traits to succeeding in any endeavor lies within the amount of personal ownership you take for your actions and decision. While the principles in this book are explained through the context of combat, these principles are highly applicable to succeeding, rather in the boardroom or in the kitchen.

One of my favorite principles in the book discusses discipline leading to freedom. When you're more disciplined, this leads to you creating systems and processes for reoccurring tasks and thus frees up mental bandwidth and time to focus on other important matters.

4. Man's Search For Meaning, by Viktor E. Frankl

With detailed discussions about life in concentration camps and lessons about survival, this book can potentially change your entire perspective on how you view the world.

He loses his parents, brother, and pregnant wife but survives because he has a 'why' for why he wants to continue living. He noted in the book that many prisoners lost their 'why' and quickly lost their life as a result.

A big lesson that is broadly applicable to all aspects of our lives is when he mentions that "we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose."

5. Three Feet From Gold: Turn Your Obstacles Into Opportunities! (Think and Grow Rich), by Sharon L. Lechter & Greg S. Reid

This book, inspired by Napoleon Hill's classic Think and Grow Rich is centered around never giving up because you could be really close to a breakthrough. Or as they put it, you could be "three feet from gold", meaning that many of us quit just before we're near our desired goal.

Another helpful tool from this book is the concept of the index card strategy. On one side, write "I promise", and then on the back include those things you want to keep a promise on. I promised myself to choose optimism, love, and to never give up because I could be three feet from gold.

Make a promise to yourself and keep the card with you at all times.
