Success has many myths. Here are some of the most prominent ones:
1: Success is binary
Some people think that you are either successful or a failure. You can't be both. However, in reality, success is fuzzy. Everyone is successful to some extent and there is no such thing as absolute success.
2: Success makes you happy
Most people think that they would be happy if they became successful in an endeavor. This rarely happens. While they may feel happy for a little while after their success, they soon aim at even higher things in life and get busy working towards their next goal. The more you succeed, the higher the bar you set for your life. As Oscar Wilde aptly said, "There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."
3: Success follows hard work
The greatest myth about success is that if you work hard over a long period of time, you'll get there. This is rarely the truth. A donkey can't become a horse, however hard it may work. In the same way, you can't become a great artist, musician, writer, scientist, entrepreneur, or sportsman merely by working hard unless you have the right talent and aptitude for it. If you have the right talent, you can succeed with minimum effort. If you don't, your effort can only take you up to a certain point.
4: Successful people are brilliant
When you are successful, you often attribute your success to your talent, ability, and hard work. However, even with everything on your side, you still can't succeed unless you are doing the right thing at the right time in the right place. Imagine if Bill Gates had been born in a third-world country. He would have never succeeded in creating Microsoft. He might have been an ordinary businessman even if he'd been born in the U.S. a few decades later or a few decades earlier. If Mahatma Gandhi had been born in today's India, he would have failed to get elected even for a municipality. You often achieve success just being in the right place at the right time.
